Sonya Lee

Sonya Lee is a Korean-Canadian filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer dedicated to stories that intersect science, nature, people, and culture. Her 3 x 22-episode documentary series, Our Ocean Table, co-produced with Jugaad Sisters for TELUS Originals, about Korean food, culture, and sustainable seafood in Canada, was nominated for a Jackson Wild Media Award for Best People & Nature Short Film in 2025 and will premiere in spring 2026. Her first feature film for CBC The Nature of Things, produced with River Road Films, Jawsome: Canada’s Great White Sharks, has been nominated for Best Science & Nature Documentary or Series at the 2025 Canadian Screen Awards, was part of National Geographic Channel’s Sharkfest, and is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu. Sonya received the Jackson Wild Rising Star Award in 2025 and participated in the Documentary Organization of Canada’s Breakthrough program in 2023.
